Power and Accountability

Hi. I'm Bob Monks. And I'm holding up the first book that Nell Minow and I wrote -- on the subject of corporate governance. We wrote this book because we were upset and bewildered over the materials that were then available. This was 1991, and if you wanted to read about corporate governance, you had to read about economics, or you had to read law, or you had to read ethics, or you had to read politics, and each author would always describe the subject in the language of his own specialty.

So, it was rather like that wonderful fable about the blind man feeling the elephant and trying to describe it -- everyone saw what they wanted to see. We wrote this book because we wanted to have a common language. We wanted to begin the process that people who dialed "corporate governance" into any one of the search engines on the Internet, could actually come up with something that talked about the field as a whole.

And the book has done very well and I'm pleased to say, that because of a fortuity, we were able to acquire back the copyright and the book is available in it entirety -- free -- on the net. And we're glad to share it with you.
