We started LENS in 1992, in order to prove a very simple proposition -- a corporation, having informed, motivated, and involved owners -- is worth more than one without.

It was very clear to us that you could not expect institutional investors -- fiduciaries -- to commit energy to informing themselves and to being active in affairs of their portfolio companies until and unless it was absolutely irrefutable that such involvement added value. Because that after all, is the requirement that trustees operate under.

We started LENS with our own money and invested first in four of the Dow Jones 30 stocks -- Westinghouse, Eastman Kodak, Sears Roebuck, and American Express -- and over the course of the last nine years, our performance record has been better than that of the S&P 500. And we've finally ended our operations in June of this year at a level some 50% over the S&P for that entire period.
