ROBERT MONKS PROFESSORSHIP OF CORPORATE GOVERNANCE

Excerpt - Report of the General Board on the establishment of a Robert Monks Professorship of Corporate Governance:

As seen in The Economist...

The Robert Monks Professorship
of Corporate Governance

In 1996 the University received a donation from Mr Robert Monks to facilitate the development of teaching and research in Corporate Governance in the Judge Institute. This donation funded research posts, support for research students, curriculum development in the MBA and MPhil programmes and the creation of a cross-faculty corporate governance network, seminars and conferences.  The focus of this work in the Judge Institute was lead by John Roberts on corporate leadership and accountability.

A donation of 4 million US dollars has been received from Mr Dennis Kozlowski and Tyco Corporation and in honour of the donors’ wish has secured the establishment of the Robert Monks Professor of Corporate Governance in perpetuity in the Judge Institute. It is expected that the inaugural professor will build on existing activities to develop teaching, research and dissemination programmes that will tackle issues of major importance for the 21st century.  These
include the legal and institutional framework within which corporations operate, the roles of boards of directors and their relationship to different external stakeholders including institutional investors, NGOs, customers, national governments and super national agencies.

It is anticipated that the approach to the further development of the subject will be multi-disciplinary and will draw in contributions, beyond the Judge Institute, from economists, political scientists, lawyers and anthropologists.  We anticipate that the successful candidate will be a distinguished expert in one of the following fields: business strategy, organisational behaviour, company law, business ethics, social psychology or applied economics, and will place value on a multi-disciplinary approach to the subject.

It is expected that the Robert Monks Professor in Corporate Governance will be committed to:

  • The education of future generations of entrepreneurs, managers and investors in an understanding of the relationship between the sustainable improvement of corporate performance and national and global social and economic development.
  • The development, application and dissemination of original research which will advance social, economic and management theory and contribute to improvements in the practice of corporate governance in all its aspects.
  • The creation of an international knowledge sharing network on corporate governance, with particular emphasis on links between Europe, USA and Asia.
  • The creation of a centre of excellence in the University of Cambridge in corporate governance, building on existing multi-disciplinary work, embracing management studies and work being undertaken by the ESRC Centre for Business research involving applied economics and law.
