Early in 2001 Paul Myners issued a report that had been commissioned by the Labour Party in the United Kingdom on the subject of institutional investors. Among other subjects which this report considers is shareholder activism. Myners analyzes the various reasons why shareholders have traditionally said that they can't and they won't be active, and he dismisses these. In fact, he insists that conflict of interest laws be enforced and that henceforth institutional investors in the United Kingdom must be responsible for the management of companies whose shares they hold in their portfolio. He transfers the burden to the management and says that from this time on shareholder fiduciaries will be held accountable for the loss of value in portfolio companies. Printed copies
