Press Release: Cambridge University's business school announces new professor to boost research into corporate accountability

The Judge Institute of Management, Cambridge University's business school has appointed Simon Deakin as the inaugural holder of the Robert Monks Professor of Corporate Governance.

Professor Deakin joins the business school from the University's law faculty where he has been a lecturer for the last ten years. He is a leading expert in Corporate Governance and has published widely on the subject through a variety of research projects on inter-firm contracting, hostile takeover bids, the duties of company directors and the role of 'stakeholders' in corporate restructuring and insolvency.

The professorship has been established in perpetuity thanks to a donation of $4m from Mr Dennis Kozlowski of Tyco International.

It was the donors wish that the Professorship be named after Robert Monks, a close friend and vocal advocate of corporate accountability who has already funded a research centre at the Judge Institute.

The Professorship will build on this activity and help cement the Judge Institute's reputation for excellence in this subject area.

An official signing ceremony to commemorate the Professorship will take place at the Judge Institute on the 19 September 2001.

Quotes

"Corporate governance is about how companies are directed and controlled. Good governance is an essential ingredient in corporate success and sustainable economic growth. Research in governance requires an interdisciplinary analysis, drawing above all on economics and law, and a close understanding of modern business practice of the kind which comes from detailed empirical studies in a range of national systems. Scholars in Cambridge are among those who have pioneered this approach over the past decade. As Robert Monks professor, I look forward to building on this work and helping to make Cambridge a leading centre for corporate governance research."

"I was pleased to make this donation to the Judge Institute of Management. The education of future entrepreneurs, managers and investors in an understanding of sustainable corporate performance is a fundamental part of any leading business school."
Dennis Kozlowski, Tyco International

"I am personally delighted that Simon Deakin has undertaken to head the new Governance Centre at Cambridge. He is an ideal leader in the creation of a global centre for the study of this important subject."
Robert Monks
